A lot of us would love a break away, which is why today we’re answering some frequently asked questions about the NDIS and travel.

With a growing vaccination rate and news of the international travel ban on the cusp of being lifted, it may seem like travel could slowly be returning to what it was pre-pandemic. 

The great news is, if you have always wanted to travel, but stopped short because of the complications of logistics, it doesn’t have to be this way. You can find advice below to answer some of your travel questions.

Does the NDIS fund holidays?  

The answer is no, the NDIS does not cover holidays 👉but it may cover use of your funds for the cost of care and support while you are on holidays, if travel supports the goals in your NDIS plan.

Want to travel but need extra care & support?

Don’t let that stop you. You may be able to use your NDIS funding to provide the assistance you need.

These supports need to be deemed Reasonable and Necessary and may include things like a support worker to accompany you for the duration of the trip, portable equipment hire like a wheelchair or hoist, or accessible transport/accommodation options.

What's not covered under the NDIS?

Things like flights, everyday expenses, accommodation, meals, and entertainment are not covered by the NDIS as these costs are not specific to disability. However, allocation of funding is based on individual needs and goals. 

Planning to take a support worker with you?

It is best to work with your support coordinator on this one, but here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Ensure you have enough funding in your Core budget to cover the trip away, but also for the remainder of the plan. If you are a My Plan Manager client, a great way to do this is through the My Plan Manager client portal, where you can track spending in a snapshot. The client portal is also accessible through the new and improved My Plan Manager client app.

  • Think carefully about the support worker you take away with you, you will be with them a lot!

  • Before departing, establish how many hours of support your support worker will be invoicing for and ensure this is documented in a service agreement.

  • Consider travelling in a group and sharing support workers to keep the cost down. A group holiday is also a great way to grow friendships and share memories.
